If you are planning on becoming a hotel manager, it is not going to be an easy task. It takes a lot of effort and commitment; keeping in mind that hotels are 24/7 running businesses so you need to be prepared to put all your time in it. It is vital that you possess the necessary qualifications, be well equipped in people skills and negotiation.

Getting an education

Get an undergraduate degree either in business or hospitality. Obtain a travel and tourism diploma as a basic qualification. Studying business will help you manage your resources better and improve your interpersonal skills. A more specialized hospitality degree will teach you about customer service, basic etiquette needed when handling customers, how to delegate your tasks and work in a team etc. For upscale hotels such as a five star or seven star hotels will need a master’s degree too. Practical experience is vital when seeking to be a manager. Look for internships at a well-established hotel so that you can get an all-round experience.

Developing management skills

The highest level of customer service skills is the most important requirement when it comes to a hotel manager. You need to be friendly and courteous in dealing with them. Always be prepared to listen to their problems and concerns, stay patient and take necessary actions calmly. Apologize for any inconvenience and show them that you are doing your best to give them a comfortable stay.  Tasks should be delegated carefully so that all areas are covered. For this, you need to know your employees very well; their skills, strengths and weaknesses. Give employees achievable targets, let them voice their concerns and also give feedback. Use your knowledge gained from travel and tourism courses.Working in a hotel
